I've noticed a tiny bit of confusion over how this should be handled, so being who I am, I've decided to give my personal view of how a battle should run on this site.
A Pokemon battle here is more like the show, then like the card game or video games. Here is what I like to call "Practical Battles" What do I mean by that? I mean that instead of just 'Pokemon A uses attack A on Pokemon B, Pokemon B uses Attack D on Pokemon A' we use attacks like a strategy.
Let use a battle between a Pikachu (everyone's favorite) and a Bulbasaur. Now, here is how a battle on a Game Boy or Colosseum would go...
Bulbasaur uses Tackle
<POW>
Pikachu uses Thundershock
<ZAP>
Bulbasaur is Paralyzed!
Bulbasaur uses Vine Whip
*note how that attack is just an attack and thats it
Pikachu uses Thundershock
Critical hit!
Bulbasaur uses Tackle
Attack failed!
Pikachu uses Thundershock
Critical Hit!
Bulbasaur has fainted!
Not very interesting... I know. But as they do on the show, and we are asked to on this site, we have the freedom to use the attacks as a practical thing, hence "Practical Battle" Let's see that same battle that can be played on the site...
The heat of the day bared down on the two Pokemon. Pikachu stood poised and ready, and Bulbasaur was definitely feeling the power. Without warning, Bulbasaur dug into he earth, and kicked off. Pikachu had no time to evade, and Bulbasaur slammed into it with a Tackle. Pikachu flew back, and landed on its back, a little hurt, but far from eh game. Kevin smiled, he had trained his Pokemon well.
"Save the laugh, its far from over." Linnis said, as the Pikachu flipped up. With an agreeing "Pi-KA!" Linnis immediately pointed at the Bulbasaur. "Pikachu, use your speed to move and then use Thundershock!" Pikachu moved too quick to be seen, and appeared at different areas, confusing Bulbasaur until Pikachu was suddenly on top of his back, and squeezed it's cheeks. With a satisfying, "Pi-ka-CHU!" it electrified Bulbasaur, it's eyes wide in shock.
By the attack's end, the shocks had gone right to Bulbasaur's nervous system, and he was in a state of Paralysis. However, he shook his head. He was not ready to give up, and easily leaped up to avoid the next shock. Kevin had to think of something else, that little mouse was too fast.
"Bulbasaur, use Vine Whip, keep Pikachu from moving!" Kevin said, and two vines ran from the bulb to catch Pikachu, and wrapped it up. Bulkbasaur then went ont to squeeze the mouse. Pikachu's face scrunched in to show that it was in pain, and Linnis had to think fast, but the answer seemed to come much faster. "Pikachu, use the vines to shock him again!"
The sudden shock overloaded his nerves, and Bulbasaur's muscles relaxed, loosening the vines. Bulbasaur had to finish this, or else it would have a hard time. "Bulbasaur, keep him tied, and use Tackle!" Kevin said, and Bublasaur did two things. One, he began to retract the vines that were not tied to Pikachu, and two, he was running at Pikachu, which made the attack go fast. However, the shock was enough to have the Paralysis effect him, and right before the attack could happen, Bulbasur collapsed, and his vines fell off and went limp.
Linnis was next to grin. "Pikachu, finish it off that way you know how!"...
See what I mean? I just took that little blurt of a battle, and expanded it, showing how everything fits. Use the attacks as a practical thing, not just an attack. Dratini used Wrap and coiled around the Staryu, stopping it's rotation. That is an example of a practical attack in a battle. Pidgeot went up to the ceiling and pushed open the sky-roof, and then proceeded to use Gust to blow the smoke out of the gym, while his trainer searched for the assailant. That's an example of a practical attack used out of battle. As Ryu fell down the black abyss of the ravine, he closed his eyes, when all of a sudden he felt a tug and stopped falling, when he opened his eyes, he found himself being held by Venasuar's Vine Whip, and Venasaur proceeded to lift him to safety. That was an example of a practical attack used with Human interaction.
Three different way of expanding how you battle. It's not move after move, its more like move, and move used in reaction to first move. Enjoy! -- by Kevin Gustwind
